Solar Thermal

What is Solar Thermal?

Solar thermal installations are becoming an ever increasing way of providing hot water for your home. They work by using solar energy to heat a transfer fluid in the panels. The heat from this fluid is then transferred to your hot water cylinder via a separate coil in you hot water cylinder. When installing solar thermal systems it is usually necessary to up-grade your hot water cylinder for a twin coil cylinder. This can either be a vented or unvented mains pressure cylinder.

A solar thermal installation can provide your home with typically around 60 -70% of your home’s annual hot water requirements, so saving you money on your energy bills. With the introduction of the RHI (Renewable Heat Incentive) in April 2014, now has never been a better time to install solar thermal. As well as saving money on your energy bills, you will receive payments of around £300.00 per year for a period of 7 years giving you a great reason to install solar thermal now.

A typical domestic installation cost between £2995.00 – £4500.00 and will require an area of 3-6sq mtrs on your roof, so is a more affordable option than solar PV and requiring much less space, but still giving you a return on your investment. So you can clearly see why solar thermal is becoming more popular choice.

Solar Thermal panels come typically in two types – Flat Plate and Evacuated Tubes. Both have their advantages and disadvantages.

Flat Plate

Flat plate collectors are slightly less efficient so requiring a slightly larger roof area. They can be flush mounted in your roof so more aesthetically pleasing. They are slightly cheaper than evacuated tubes.

Evacuated Tubes

Evacuated tubes are more efficient than flat plate collectors, and are typically installed on the roof on a bracket system.
